Are you an aspiring journalist with a fiery passion to tell the stories of underserved communities? A blogger with a feminist or ethnic hat? Or even a seasoned writer with the drive to lend your voice to the immigrant community? Then consider applying for the 2012 New American Media Immigrant Women Fellowship.
NAM is offering 10 fellowships, 5 for journalists in the ethnic media sector and 5 for mainstream journalists, to writers who want to write about the intersection of immigration and gender. Bloggers and online journalists are welcome to apply.
According to NAM, “women are now the majority of immigrants, not just in the United States, but worldwide.” This will be your opportunity to “learn more about how immigrant women are integrating into the diverse communities where they live throughout the U.S., how the current immigration laws enacted by various states affect women, and why immigration is a feminist issue.”
Funded by Atlantic Philanthropies, the fellowship will include two parts: 1) participation in a two-day training program to be held in Washington, D.C. on Thursday and Friday, April 19-20, 2012; and 2) the publication of an in-depth, substantive story (or series) focusing on the challenges and/or triumphs of immigrant women in the United States, before August 30, 2012. Fellows receive a $2000 stipend following publication.
Applications are due January 23rd. For more details and for access to the application, see the NAM site here.
Good luck!
