Here’s another Vietnamese American you may not be familiar with, even though you’ve probably come into contact with his work at some point in your life. If you’ve ever logged onto nytimes.com (which happens to be the most visited American online news site) anytime in the past few years, then you’ve definitely come across his work.
Khoi Vinh is a well-regarded web designer, blogger, and former Designer Director of nytimes.com. He stepped down from his position as Design Director late last year to pursue his own path, but even now the influences of his design philosophy (“a maximum of elegance with a minimum of ornamentation”) remain on the site. The Lens Blog you go to for expanded photojournalism? Khoi worked on that. The Opinion Pages you check for commentary and debate? Khoi worked on that too.
Here’s a talk Khoi gave last year on how he approaches web design and integrating the news with emerging platforms, like tablets and mobile phones. It’s interesting to note what considerations he takes in constructing a comprehensive reading experience unique to each medium, and how he draws the relationships between design and journalism.

You can check out Khoi’s blog (witty, insightful, and a pop culture treasure trove) at subtraction.com. He also recently had a book published, Ordering Disorder: Grid Principles for Web Design. Check out more biographical information and a Q&A section with Khoi here.
As design and tech junkies, the VTP team definitely sees Khoi as an inspiration. We look forward to seeing his next big project.
