Joe Nguyen: Just Another Vietnamese-Jewish-American Comedian

January 3, 2011 by Jennie Le Leave a Comment

Joe Nguyen is a constant reminder that I shouldn’t categorize people at the glance of a name. The combination of “Average Joe” and “Common Nguyen” is misleading: if you look up “Joe Nguyen” in the White Pages, there are over 100 across America. However, an average and common name does not make an average and common person.

Meet Joe Nguyen. He’s a comedian.

According to jweekly.com, “He’s a native of the Deep South, and a Dominican-German-Vietnamese-American by way of Shanghai. And he’s Jewish. ”

He came to California to study Philosophy at Pomona College, and luckily he realized his talent for comedy and ran with it.

What particularly strikes my interest is that he’s an Asian-American working comedian. Vietnamese-American entertainers are rare; Vietnamese-American comedians are even rarer. And his multicultural background definitely gives his material originality and a worldly taste.

Check out some of his work below.
