An agreement signed earlier this month has set a new Science and Technology University to open this coming September near Hanoi. Nguyen Thien Nanh, Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Education and Training, and Valérie Pécresse, France’s Minister for Higher Education and Research, met June last year to discuss the project details. French-Vietnam partnership began when Nguyen Thien Nanh asked France for aid in advancing Vietnam’s science academics. An estimated US$242 million [1] is said to be filtered into the new educational institution. The University will have studies with emphasis in biotechnology-pharmacology, aeronautics-space, energy, ICTs, materials-nanotechnologies and environment-water-oceanography. USTH will be located in the Hoa Lac High Tech Park, (30 Kilometers from Hanoi), and is expected to have an enrollment of 8,000+ students within it’s first year. Members and staffs of future University will be provided training and guidance promised by the French government. Nguyen Thien Nanh has also requested that a French chancellor be chosen to head USTH.
