“Coming to Vietnam is something that we’ve been talking about for some time,” New York Philharmonic President Zarin Mehta shared with the journalists yesterday in Hanoi at the 590-seat French-colonial-era Opera House, which is nearly a century old. The oldest active symphony orchestra in the United States is visiting Vietnam for the first time in its 156-year history as part of an Asian tour which has taken it to Tokyo and Seoul. More importantly, the visit is considered to be a great factor in the cultural ties between Vietnam and the United States.
The New York Philharmonic hopes to make “many, many return visits” to Hanoi, said Alan Gilbert, the orchestra’s music director, at a press conference in Hanoi. Gilbert will conduct the orchestra in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 on both nights, with Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.4 on Friday and Brahms’ Violin Concerto on Saturday.
