12.04.09—The 16th Consultative Group (CG) Meeting in Hanoi ends with more than 8 billion USD for Vietnam’s official development assistance (ODA) program.  Carries under the mission of “Regaining rapid and sustainable economic growth”, the two-day meeting attracts more than 500 participants worldwide from business circles, government agencies, donors and mass media.

The World Bank tops the sponsorship list at 2.498 billion USD.  Japanese Foreign Ministry resumes its ODA to Vietnam at 1.64 billion USD while European Union commits to more than 1 billion USD for 2010.  Asian Development Bank (ADB), a long time supporter of Vietnam, also pledges 1.479 billion USD[1].   Other sponsors include the United States and South Korea.

The 8 billion USD will help eradicate poverty, improve its public administration, combat corruption, protect the environment, fight climate change and achieve sustainable development in all aspects.  Accepting its ODA, Vietnam pledges a growth rate of 6.5% on the whole national economy in 2010.

In the November 2009 issue of UK Economic Outlook, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) projects that Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City will have the biggest GDP growth 2008-2025 [2] with 7.0% per annum.   Many other top cities are in China and India.

The State Bank of Vietnam also has issued a document, calling the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, and the Ministry of Information and Communications to supervise and regulate the trading of foreign currencies and to punish illegal trading appropriately[3].
