Maybe I’m overreacting. A white comedian interviewing Asian students from USC who have accents, that’s actually funny, right? Am I just not finding the humor in this piece?
Fox Sports’ Bob Oschack starts off the segment saying, “Let’s give the conference’s two newest members a good old-fashioned all-American welcome by paying a visit to one of its oldest members.” Then, he continues the piece by interview students from USC. Normally, this wouldn’t piss me off. But when his interviewees are all Asian students who have accents, some of which who know nothing about football? Okay, I’m a bit peeved by the singular selection of interviewees.
As much as I love seeing sunny LA and the beautiful USC campus in the background, this video is absurdly racist. I get what you’re doing Fox Sports – juxtaposing the all-American sport football with the all-so-not-seemingly-American Asian USC students!
Fox Sports, you might think it’s funny to make some Asian people look foolish because of their accents and/or lack of knowledge of football, but you are indeed the foolish one for being so ignorant, ill-humored, and really racist. Also, the students interviewed have accents because they’re bilingual, as in, they know two languages (at least), which is more than the only one that you know, Bob Oschack. And sorry your show got canceled because of this interview. (Low blow, I know, I just can’t help it).
Soon after the release of the segment, the video was removed from Hulu and Youtube, and Lou D’Ermillo head of media relations for Fox Sports had this to say:
“We sincerely apologize to President (C.L. Max) Nikias and the entire USC community for the production and posting of the video… The context was clearly inappropriate and the video was removed as soon as we became aware of it. We will review our editorial process to determine where the breakdown occurred, and we will take steps to ensure something like this never happens again.”
Thanks Lou. In case you missed the video, watch it below!
